Charges of common assault against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and two others were withdrawn even before police had managed to contact Malema.

It remains unknown why the 22-year-old who alleged Malema had assaulted him in a road rage incident withdrew the charges late yesterday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said yesterday the complainant, Malema and two other men were allegedly involved in an altercation over bad driving.

According to Afrikaans daily Beeld, the alleged victim – Bernard Redelinghuys – wrote on his Facebook page:

“I indicated to him that he should please just look and at the traffic light, he and his 2 ‘colleagues’ got out; the one grabbed me by the arm while Malema said ‘we’ll f**k you up’ etc; one tried to take the key [from the ignition] and when I tried to prevent it, Malema got in a halfhearted slap, he then stepped back and sped way.”

Mulaudzi said the charges had been withdrawn by the complainant but the reasons were unknown.

When contacted yesterday, Malema said he was not aware of the case.
