The rally of Julius Malema's Economic Freedom Fighters got off to a slow start.

Malema arrived this afternoon to a rousing welcome at the nearly full Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, which was organised to coincide with the ANC's pre-election rally.

Obscure music groups entertained the crowd as it waited patiently for Malema and his close lieutenants to arrive at the stadium, which had been painted red by the insignia worn by party supporters.

Among the few recognisable artists who performed were Sekeleke – who has not had public performances for years – and Kelly Khumalo.

The crowd also sang anti-Jacob Zuma songs, signalling its unhappiness with the ANC.

Malema started speaking after Zuma had finished his speech at the FNB Stadium. Follow @City_Press for live tweets of Malema's speech.

Security around the stadium is tight.
