KZN storm victims to receive new homes

2009-12-18 10:11

TEN families whose homes were ravaged by storms in Bulwer in the

KwaZulu-Natal Midlands will receive homes today, the provincial government

confirmed.

“The people of Bulwer can now look forward to a happy Christmas.

Through the intervention of the provincial government, 10 families affected by

the recent storms will now have homes,” said Dabenhle Sibiya, spokesperson for

premier Zweli Mkhize.

The handing over of homes would be attended by Home Affairs

Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. She would also hand over 250 identity documents

to people who lost these during the storms.

Gcinile Mabulu, parliamentary liaison officer for the minister,

said about 300 identity documents would be handed over today.

“The visit to Bulwer comes within the context of recent storms that

devastated the area, causing serious damage to infrastructure including houses

that were destroyed while a number of citizens lost their IDs,” Mabulu

said.

Sibiya said the provincial government had not only provided shelter

for flood victims but also provided them with social welfare services.

“We are

also providing them social welfare services such as identity documents and food

parcels.”

The people of Bulwer had been severely affected by the recent

storms for the second time this year, added Sibiya.
