In a first for local television, Kasi Cribs: Edladleni takes the popular reality show model and makes it local with a new show that celebrates black success and opulence in a way no other TV show has done before.

Comedian, actor and now presenter, Siyabonga Brian Radebe, has been tasked with giving a voice to the voiceless ordinary South Africans who have worked hard to bring a bit of glam back into their homes through renovations, extensions, and spectacular décor in up-and-coming neighbourhoods.

Radebe spoke to #Trending about his new project, which sees him add the presenting feather to his illustrious cap. The comedian says the show has been an “eye-opener, a learning and humbling yet exciting experience”, which has seen him interact and mingle with ordinary South Africans in the comfort of their glamorous homes.

“The good thing about Kasi Cribs is that it showcases our neighbourhoods at their best. It is not MTV or Top Billing stuff, but the stories behind the homes; the warmth of the people is something that makes the show stand out”.

The former Generations actor says he had to read up on the home and décor terminology to appear “book smart” on TV.

Although the show is currently limited to homes in Gauteng, there is a possibility that with the following season, the show could move to showcase homes in other provinces.

The format of the show takes a deeper and more relaxed look at some of the most beautiful homes in townships, as the presenter interacts with the owner and his family, as well as the neighbours. He also gets to play games and involve the family and owners in a range of activities to create a homely atmosphere for the viewers, he says.

“Look, I had fun doing the show … I got to interact with different people with different cultures. There were times when language was a stumbling block, but that never took away from the welcoming experience and warmth I received throughout my visits to different homes in and around the province of Gauteng.

“As you know, I am more of a performing artist than a presenter, so when I received a call through my wife I was not keen on taking on a presenting job, as I had never presented in my life. But her insistence and encouragement eventually resulted in me going for the screen tests, and after that I was told by the producers that I had made it”.

Kasi Cribs was shot at various homes in Gauteng late last year, during the time that the comedian was involved with the Oude Meester Mastery in the Making Tour, which saw the young comedian tour Durban, Cape Town and Joburg with his mentor and Oude Meester brand ambassador, Idris Elba.

As a first-time presenter, Radebe says he sometimes broke presenting codes and had to remind himself to keep to the convention of TV presenting without losing his style of doing things.

“It was quite a challenge for me to get into presenting but luckily connecting with ordinary people made things easier as I got the hang of things”.
