Katlehong poison deaths: Mother charged with murder

2013-10-17 13:20

The mother of the two girls suspected to have died after being poisoned in Zonkizizwe, Katlehong, on Gauteng’s East Rand, will be charged with murder, police say.

“She is currently under police guard at the Natalspruit Hospital and she will be charged with two counts of murder,” said police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, adding that her initial statement to the police has been false.

She had told police her husband had dropped her and the two girls in an open field and she didn’t know the area. The mother had also told police that they had slept in an abandoned house and drank cool drink, which her husband had given them.

“Police interviewed several witnesses who confirmed that she has not been in Witbank (where she lives) and her family is in Zonkizizwe. The father of the two little children was traced and submitted a statement to the police.

“The motive for the killing might be related to domestic issues between the father of the girls and the suspect. Although the postmortem was conducted today, the results are still not available”.

The bodies of the two girls were discovered in an open field yesterday morning.
