Just a few hours before the Metro FM Music Awards started in Durban last night, singer Kelly Khumalo and her maskandi musician boyfriend Zamokwakhe “Bhaka” Nzama allegedly fought in a hotel.

Speaking to City Press, Nzama said the couple had fought at Durban’s Elangeni Hotel on the beachfront just before 5pm.

Nzama said he came to the hotel to visit to Khumalo. With his left eye swollen closed, Nzama claimed Khumalo poked him in this eye with one of her nails.

“We were sitting in her room and having a conversation while she was getting her make-up done. I then jokingly said I did not realise just how beautiful she looked after she put make-up on.”

That is when all hell broke loose.

Nzama said that the fight started after Khumalo asked him to divorce his first wife, Jabu, if he wanted to marry her.

The couple, who have been seeing each other for the past couple of months, were allegedly planning to tie the knot, and half the lobola has allegedly already been paid.

“I told her that, in no uncertain terms, would I divorce my first wife for her,” Nzama said in the hotel lobby last night.

“She started shoving me around, beating me and even poked my eye with one of her nails. She is a very a strong woman, and am sure if she had a weapon, she would have used it on me.”

He added that he was not planning to lay a charge against his lover, because “I am a man”.

Nzama said Khumalo had threated to open a case against him, and that after the altercation, the songstress took her clothes and left the hotel.

“I don’t know where she ran to. I don’t even know how she will get to the awards because she left the car in the hotel parking bay.”

The car is a red Audi A3 convertible, which Nzama had given to Khumalo to use.

Nzama, who is always accompanied by at least six bodyguards, said his men were in the parking lot when the incident happened.

Khumalo was at the awards ceremony, but Nzama was nowhere to be seen. Khumalo could not be reached for comment last night.

Khumalo has been unlucky in love – her last boyfriend, Orlando Pirates and Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, was killed at her home during an alleged robbery, and Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, the father of her first child, is in jail for murder.
