Khaya steamroller surges ahead, but...

Khaya Mthethwa for SA Idol!

That’s the rallying call ringing loudly across social network sites and at recordings of the show.

This week, the Team Khaya revolution gained momentum when celebrities and ordinary Joes came to the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani en masse to show support for their Idol.

Placards reading “Khaya Rocks!” and “I Love Khaya” were seen, while celebrities such as Generations actress Zenande Mfenyana and YO! TV producer Akhumzi Jezile sported “Team Khaya” T-shirts.

Mfenyana commented on Twitter: “I hope you are ready to vote tweethearts. let your vote speak volumes #TeamKhayaMthethwa (sic).”

TV personality Minenhle Dlamini also came to show her support and former cricket commentator Kass Naidoo joined in the Khaya craze on Twitter. “I love Khaya!” she declared.

Mthethwa (25) is the son of a pastor from Umlazi and has worked with the likes of award-winning jazz artist Ernie Smith, gospel star Ntokozo Mbambo and Joyous Celebration.

In fact, members of the popular gospel choir were there to support him when he belted out Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You.

Joyous Celebration hailed Mthethwa in a special song, uKhaya Uyena Owethu (Khaya is ours).

Jezile, the Yo! TV producer, insists that Mthethwa will be “the next Idol”. “Khaya has so much star quality and has proven from his first audition that he can be an Idol.”

But being an early favourite may have the opposite effect for Mthethwa.

Judge Gareth Cliff said it best last night during his critique of Mthethwa’s performance: “You are an early favourite of the show, which is a poisoned chalice because it places so much pressure on you. Take smaller steps, you still have a lot to prove. Keep a reserve. You don’t want to burn out.”

Mthethwa’s viral fame has seen him go from 1 400 followers on Twitter to 12 879 by Friday night – all in two weeks. Some of his fans include musicians Lyle Volkwyn, Kabomo Vilakazi and Swazi Dlamini.

There’s even a website, www.khayamthethwa.com which has sprung up to pay tribute to the young singer.
