Khayelitsha mother was a minor

Evidence has revealed that a Khayelitsha mother accused of murdering her baby was a minor of 17, Western Cape police said.

“This was established on the request of her ID book during an interview,” Captain Anneke van der Vyver said.
It was previously reported that the accused was 18.

The evidence was presented in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court yesterday evening when the minor appeared briefly.

“According to the Child Care Act, she will have to be transferred to a place of safety for further detention, because a minor may not be detained in police cells,” Van der Vyver said.

The accused, who was arrested on Tuesday evening, was expected to re-appear in court today.

On Monday, the young mother claimed her six-week-old baby boy, Simamkele Baleni, was stolen from her at the Khayelitsha Day Hospital.

She had told the police that a woman offered to hold him while she went to the toilet, and on her return she found the woman and Baleni gone.

The baby’s body was found under corrugated iron sheets at the Green Point informal settlement a day later.
