Khuli Chana cops face attempted murder charges

The police officers who shot at musician Khuli Chana have been charged with attempted murder.

The Bedfordview police officers shot and wounded Chana in Midrand in October after they mistook his car for that of a kidnapper. At the time, Chana alleged that six bullets had been fired at the passenger side of his car.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the Director of Public Prosecutions had decided to charge the two officers with attempted murder, in line with Ipid’s recommendations.

The two will be summoned to appear in court on February 18 next year, he said.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Neville Malila said no information had been communicated to the police as yet regarding the Ipid investigation.

Chana’s agent was unavailable for comment.

Last month, the Gauteng police said they were investigating a case of attempted murder against Chana, who allegedly tried to run over the police officers on the scene.
