Khune new Chiefs captain

2011-10-25 13:29

After weeks of speculation, Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune as their new club’s captain.

Khune replaces Jimmy Tau who had earlier stepped down as captain as speculation is rife that his resignation was a result of fallout with coach Vladimir Vermezovic.

It is understood that Vermezovic had a go at Tau questioning his leadership skills following a loss against Golden Arrows at Peter Mokaba Stadium this month.

For the past two weeks, there were now media reports emerging that Tau might have rubbed Vermezovic the wrong way, hence he was left out of Chiefs’ friendly match against Bloemfontein Celtic in the Macufe Cup and was sidelined for a league encounter against Black Leopards.

In the Telkom Cup game against Platinum Stars on Sunday, veteran Tinashe Nengomasha was the stand-in captain.

According to the statement released by the club, the appointment follows deliberations within the Club and Coach’s decision as a result of the media speculation surrounding Jimmy Tau’s tenure as captain.

“The Club wishes to put it on record that Jimmy Tau did not send an email to the Club resigning as a captain and further that there was no “bust up” between the Head Coach, Vladimir Vermezovic and Jimmy Tau as reported in the media,” according to the statement.
