Khune out of Nigeria game

2014-01-18 13:29

It is official: Itumeleng Khune is out of Bafana Bafana’s crucial African Nations Championship (Chan) game against Nigeria tomorrow evening.

Khune suffered an ankle injury in Bafana’s 1-all draw with Mali on Wednesday and has failed to recover on time for tomorrow’s game.

Coach Gordon Igesund said the goalkeeper’s ankle was still tender and sore and it was not worth taking the risk. But he said he had capable replacements to fill Khune’s shoes.

“He is definitely out, because his mobility is not good and it won’t help to give him injections or strap his ankle. I have capable goalkeepers in the squad and I am confident whoever gets the nod will do well,” said Igesund.

He said Moeneeb Josephs will deputise for Khune in goals and Thabo Nthethe will wear the captain’s armband.

Igesund said he was looking forward to the game against Bafana’s nemesis.

“Everybody is excited about the game and it’s going to be a good game. Nigeria has been doing well under Stephen (Keshi) and we both need a win at all costs, but I am confident we will do well.”

Bafana need only a draw to advance to the knockout stages while Nigeria need an outright victory to book a place in the quarterfinals.

Kickoff is at 7pm.
