Pirates keep pace after 1-0 win over Free State Stars

Orlando Pirates gained ground and kept in touch with the early pacesetters with their victory tonight.

The win, delivered via a volleyed 72nd-minute strike by Daine Klate, drew coach Vladimir Vermezovic’s side level on 14 points with Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns, the other teams that are trailing Absa Premiership log leaders Kaizer Chiefs for the top five positions.

Ajax host Chiefs tomorrow.

Despite a patchy display against Stars, the solitary goal handed Pirates their second league win in four matches at their spiritual home.

This win takes Bucs to second position by virtue of a better goal difference.

But they had to dig deep to put one over their visitors from the Free State.

Stars came to Soweto to frustrate Pirates, and boy did they, with the hope that they would get away with a point.

The man who kept Pirates at bay was Stars goalkeeper Glenn Verbauwhede, the 29-year-old Belgian who came to South Africa via Sundowns.

The keeper first denied Bucs marksman Kermit Erasmus inside the opening five minutes and followed up with a series of brave stops on almost every Pirates attempt that came his way.

But he could do little to do stop Klate’s scorcher.

Stars raided the Pirates goal area late in the game, but desperate defending and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa provided answers to Ea Lla Koto’s late rally.

Pirates held on into injury time when midfielder Issa Sarr cleared a goal-bound shot off the line.

Two tricky assignments await Bucs in the next two weeks leading up to the Soweto derby against Chiefs on November 1.
