Many South Africans, whether at home or out jamming on a dance floor, ushered in the new year listening to Koze Kuse by DJ Merlon and Mondli Ngcobo – but the hit was never even supposed to be a song.

Koze Kuse has been on heavy rotation on local radio stations recently, and it started life as a freestyle jam by DJ Merlon, whose real name is Sibusiso Mhlongo, and Ngcobo at Umlazi’s Eyadini Lounge in Durban early last year.

The pair had just performed their track Who we Are and started jamming, with Mhlongo mixing sounds and Ngcobo making up lyrics on the spot.

Mhlongo told City Press this week that for the next six months, fans pestered them nonstop to perform the “song” again.

Eventually, they relented and headed to the studio to produce what became one of late 2014’s biggest House tunes.

Koze Kuse is now available on an EP with two other tracks.

“It’s been quite overwhelming. I didn’t expect it to be such a hit,” said Mhlongo.

“The popularity of the song has opened many doors. I was signed to Universal Records SA three weeks ago.”

Mhlongo plans to release a full-length album this year and has names like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masekela on his collaborators’ wish list.
