Labour dispute stops Rea Vaya

2010-05-10 13:57

Johannesburg’s showcase Rea Vaya Bus service has been brought to a

stand-still due to a union dispute, the company said.

“Rea Vaya buses have not commenced operations this morning due to a

union recognition dispute at the Bus Operating Company. Tickets are currently

not being sold at stations,” a statement said.

Rea Vaya forms part of the government’s bus rapid transit system

which aims to integrate public transport in cities.

The roll-out in Johannesburg has been met with resistance by taxi

companies who are worried about losing business on routes they feel they have

created over the decades.

Commuter Phumlani Mayisela died last week and nine were injured

when two Rea Vaya buses were raked with gunfire.

Rea Vaya said talks were in progress to get services back on

track.
