Labour minister suspends Manyi

2010-06-04 14:06

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has suspended Jimmy Manyi, the

controversial labour department director-general.

Mdladlana’s spokesperson, Mzobanzi Jikazana, would not be drawn on

the reasons for the suspension, except to say that Manyi would be suspended

pending the outcome of a departmental investigation.

Manyi was not available for comment this afternoon.

The Norwegian

embassy has accused Manyi of trying to lobby for black economic empowerment

companies when the embassy simply wanted to discuss co-operation around South

Africa’s campaign for decent work.

It is unclear if

the suspension is related to this allegation.

Manyi has also been under fire for holding on to the position of

president of the Black Management Forum, a lobby group for the advancement of

black managers, while in the employ of the department.
