Learners find corpse in river

2010-09-16 08:14

Five learners from Missouri Secondary in Eldorado Park south of Johannesburg were walking a friend home after school when they spotted a corpse floating in the Klipspruit River yesterday afternoon.

Ricardo Richards (16) was the first to spot the body and alerted his friends. He said: “We were not sure if it was a body so we took a stick and poked the body to see if it was indeed a human corpse.”

Clearly shaken he added: “It was scary, the skin on the man’s face was off.”

His friend, Bjorn Peterson (15), ran to the nearby Union Road and flagged down a Johannesburg Metro Police car. The officer summoned the police.

According to a Johanneburg Emergency Services employee, Synock Matobako, the “body is that of a male in his 30s or 40s and it was found lying face-down in the water”.

He said he could not speculate on the cause of death until a post-mortem had been conducted.

Klipspruit police spokesperson Nondumiso Mpantsha said police had opened an inquest docket to determine the cause of death.

“All I can say for now is that the body was found in the water and it was in a state of decomposition but I cannot say when the person might have possibly died,” said Mpantsha.

She said police would continue with their investigations. When City Press left the area curious onlookers were already coming to see what was happening while police were cordoning off the area.

Matobako said on Tuesday, in the same area three boys aged 10 to 13 years were reported drowned.

Two bodies were recovered on Tuesday while one was recovered yesterday morning. He said the two incidents were unrelated.
