Leeds United striker makes the cut for Bafana squad

2010-11-10 13:01

Leeds United striker Davide Somma was today included in the Bafana Bafana squad that would play the US next Wednesday.

This eagerly anticipated Nelson Mandela Challenge will take place at the Cape Town Stadium at 9.30pm.

Coach Pitso Mosimane said he would use the game to try new combinations after he dropped eight men from the team that played Sierra Leone last month.

He decided to call up the South African-born striker so that he could have a clearer look at him.

But he was quick to say he would not put him under pressure as this could be his first game.

“We need to create competition in the team and by bringing youngsters we want to increase our pool of players,” said Mosimane.

He said he expected Bob Bradley’s team to give Bafana stiff competition.

“There is no such thing as friendly in friendly games because we know what they can do. They are a tactically disciplined team and are coming here for a win, but we also want to win and improve our world rankings.”

Mosimane has recalled promising Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Matthew Pattison, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Siyanda Xulu, Bevan Fransman, Keegan Ritchie, Daylon Claasen and Kermit Erasmus.

In the absence of captain Aaron Mokoena, who is being rested, Steven Pienaar will lead the team.
