One of the godfathers of kwaito, Senyaka “Moruti wa Tsotsi” Kekana, has died.

This was first announced on Zynne Sibika, known as DJ Mahoota’s Instagram account.

Sibika later confirmed to City Press that the news was true but said that he was in no state to speak any more, given the state of shock he was in.

Singer and comedian Senyaka enjoyed huge success in the 1980s and 1990s, with hits such as Chisa Mpama, Romeo Wan’ Nkolotoa and Fong Kong as one part of the duo Hunger Boyz with childhood friend Kamazu.

He also had a public feud with the late Brenda Fassie where he accused her of hating amagents – youth involved in crime – and to which she responded with her hit AmaGents. His short film Moruti wa tsotsi remains a local comedy classic.

Last year, Senyaka released his first album in many years, a 12-track offering aptly titled I Am Back.

The cause of his death is still unknown.
