Legendary concert sets Jozi on fire

2013-03-24 10:00

More than 2?000 people crowded the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Joburg, to witness the rebirth of Pop Queen Brenda Fassie on stage.

The highly-anticipated appearance of MaBrrr alongside her son, Bongani, The Soil and Kelly Khumalo was to be the cherry on top at the 12-hour Hansa Festival of Legends concert.

The show predictably ran late and some people were less than impressed by digital wizardry. Rapper Slikour left after he saw it saying: “This is disappointing. The hologram was small and some people couldn’t see it.”

But some fans were treated to another eagerly-awaited moment – the Boom Shaka stage reunion.

However, Zaki Ibrahim’s much-hyped take on Lebo Mathosa for the reunion did not go well for the singer.

Judging by the crowd’s reaction, Ibrahim’s headful of blonde braids and skimpy black leather outfit was not enough to channel the much-loved Mathosa. When Ibrahim took to the stage for the opening strains of the popular song Free, the fans was less than impressed with some even booing.

“She’s horrible! I don’t know where to start. She can’t sing or dance and it’s the worst tribute I’ve ever seen,” bemoaned a disappointed Mpho Masasanya.

It was only when a video featuring the late kwaito-pop princess was beamed on the big screen – and the original Boom Shaka members poured on stage – that the fans went crazy. It seems fans took exception to Ibrahim’s limited dance moves, and being on stage with the flexible Thembi Seete did not make things any easier.

“They should have had someone who knew Lebo live. She should stick to her music,” said Katlego Mashego.

The 10-minute reunion was part of the mega show which featured 28 acts on four stages including The Muffinz, Teargas, Skwatta Kamp, TKZee, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse and Mdu.
