Lessons on how to avoid a 5-0 thrashing

2014-03-09 14:00

So much has been said about the state of our soccer that it is a challenge to tell the nation something that has not been said before.

In the past couple of years, Bafana Bafana have gone back to the drawing board several times after each footballing disaster.

We became the first World Cup host nation to bomb out in the first round in 2010. We were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations that we hosted last year. In January, Bafana were eliminated in the first round of the African Nations Championship (Chan)?–?which we also hosted.

And Wednesday’s 0-5 beating by Brazil at the FNB Stadium was not only embarrassing, but brought home the question of what is wrong with our soccer. It cannot be that in November, Bafana beat world champions Spain only to crash out of the Chan tournament in January. And, from there, to suffer our most humiliating defeat since readmission to global sport.

Suggestions have been made on what to fix?–?fire the administrators or dismantle the entire team and start from scratch. These are all good ideas, but when are we going to stop doing the same thing yet expecting different results?

What needs to happen is for Danny Jordaan and his five-month-old executive to dust off the youth development plans suggested by former coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and bring that document to life. Each recommendation should be implemented to save our nation from being the laughing stock of the world.

Local soccer’s future lies in developing young players from an early age. Patrice Motsepe laid the foundation when he pledged financial support for the Safa Second Division League and insisted on youth and development?–?the kind of investment we need to develop our soccer.
