Life’s a parade!

In their thousands, and dressed to the nines, they descended on the yearly horse racing spectacular, the Vodacom Durban July.

The event, with its 17 marquees, was attended by an estimated 50?000 people from across the country, most of whom seemed to have come for the fashion rather than the racing.

People chose bright colours – purple, royal blue and red – and many couples dressed thematically. Some were Egyptian, others looked like Arab sheiks and some looked as if they were about to get married.

TV personality Gerry Elsdon and her husband Kerry fitted that bill. She wore a white dress with a tiara which she said she had “Gerrified”, while her husband wore a classic black suit, bowtie and white shirt.

“I put this garment together with material from Issey Miyake and some elements from Norman and the Boys,” she said.

Former Miss South Africa Basetsane Kumalo also arrived at the event with hubby Romeo, dressed by Durban designer Gavin Rajah. She opted for a black dress with gold tassles, matching hat and black patent boots.

Another pageant queen in attendance was reigning Miss SA Bokang Montjane, wearing a black boob-tube dress from Gideon.

Wearing the most playful garment was Espresso presenter Liezl van der Westhuizen, in a purple outfit made by Craig Jacobs. The skirt was balloons and the top was constructed from Cadbury chocolate wrappers, with matching patent leather heels.

Most of the celebrities found their way to the Vodacom VIP marquee. Swimwear model Shashi Naidoo was dressed in baby pink, and YFM twins Ntando and Hlelo Mesina wore identical black-and-white dresses.

Other celebs graced the second most popular marquee, the Lifestyle Oasis, which hosted Minnie Dlamini in butt-hugging black-and-white shorts and a red boob-tube dress.

Shauwn Mpisane, wife of Sbu, the Durban metro police officer turned millionaire, arrived in a helicopter with Generations actress Winnie Ntshaba – best known as her character Khethiwe.

Also at the extravaganza were surfer Roxy Louw, singer Zakes Bantwini, the Bala brothers Phelo and Loyiso, Kaizer Chiefs’ Kaizer Motaung’s eldest son Bobby Motaung, MetroFM DJ Sbu Leope and TV personality Dalen Lance.
