Limpopo robber nabbed after death of girl in shop

2011-04-23 08:11

Three robbers killed a 16-year-old girl and injured a shop assistant and police officer in Mahwelereng, Limpopo.

The suspect that was since arrested is expected to appear in the Mahwelereng Magistrates Court on April 26 and would face charges of robbery and attempted murder.

The police’s brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the three robbers stole R7 000 at Maroteng village on Thursday and during their getaway they shot a shop assistant.

He said as they continued shooting outside the shop a young girl was struck by a stray bullet and died at the scene.

The men proceeded to a Chinese shop in Molekwane village, where they stole goods worth more than R17 000.

“In both instances all victims were gagged and bound.”

Police were alerted by the community and a chase ensued.

“The suspects were cornered in Mawelereng, two were arrested while one managed to escape.”

Police killed one suspect when he grabbed an arresting officer’s gun and shot at him, grazing his arm.

Further investigation revealed that the trio were involved in two hijackings and another business robbery in the Mokopane area, Mulaudzi said.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Amon Mashigo said the officers did an excellent job, even though one innocent person was killed and two people were injured.

“One bad guy unfortunately lost his life while one is behind bars. The officers did a great job,” Mashigo said.
