Lines between state and ANC ‘blurred’

2011-07-06 12:53

The lines between the state and party are blurred and threaten nation building, the Public Protector said in Pretoria today.

Advocate Thuli Madonsela, commenting on an investigation into the Hessequa local municipal mayor Christopher Taute, said: “There is a persistent problem with the need to differentiate between party and state.”

Taute had sent letters on the municipality’s letterheads in January reminding local businesses that the contracts they had were because the municipality had a council that was run by the ANC.

She found Taute’s letter amounted to misconduct, an abuse of power and maladministration.

“With a dozen years experience in local government, one would have thought he would have known better,” she said.

Later this year her office would be making proposals about the separation of the party and the state, she said.
