Long Beach

2011-04-16 09:26

Setting
I spent less than half a day at this resort. It was not quite finished, but I fell madly in love. Like its sister resort, Sugar Beach, rooms are within spitting distance of the ocean. It lies on the longest and widest stretch of white-sand coastline of any resort in Mauritius. Rising from the ashes of the 14-year-old honeymoon favourite Le Coco Beach, what sets Long Beach apart is that it is the first resort on the island to go completely green.

Rooms
There are 255 rooms in three crescents. The white wood, and splashes of orange, blue and lime give them a fresh ocean-getaway feel. Family rooms are split so mum and dad can have their privacy. Best of all, there aren’t any long dark corridors to scare the bejesus out of you in the wee hours.

Restaurants and bars
This resort is all about piazza-style living and has five restaurants. Le Marché is the European buffet style with seven open kitchens, Sapori is an Italian deli eatery, while Asia is represented by Hasu (Japanese) and Chopsticks (Chinese) and, of course, Tides.

Why go?
Adventure! I went undersea walking (one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my life), I watched shoals of tropical fish, I traced the lines of snake-like creatures with my fingers and I discovered rare coral on the sea bed. After that, I got my adrenaline pumping – and pinched a nerve in my hand – by going parasailing. Kids can enjoy accro-branche, which is a fufi-sliding and tree-climbing combo, or fun at the Generations
Teen Club.

Cost
There are two launch specials. The first is a seven-night stay valid until April 28. It’s a standard sea-view room from R13 065. The second special is also a seven-night stay in a standard sea-view room for R12 674. This is valid from April 29 to October 9.

Interesting fact
There are 6 000 energy-efficient light bulbs throughout the resort, and 3 400 plants and trees were harvested before Le Coco Beach was demolished and replanted at Long Beach.
