Long wait for accreditation at ANC indaba

2010-09-20 07:35

Blurry-eyed journalists were getting ready for the opening of the ANC’s mid-term policy review meeting this morning after spending up to 14 hours waiting for their accreditation tags.

The accreditation of members of the media started around 12.30pm yesterday and ended well after 2.30am this morning, Sapa journalists reported.

Local and international journalists were left waiting for hours at the Durban City Hall as main organiser Fikile Mbalula, who is also the deputy police minister, looked on.

Eventually, ANC national spokesperson Jackson Mthembu rolled up his own sleeves and started to help cut out accreditation cards for lamination.

Information and communications technology company Gijima had only one printer on site, which was, at times, printing one accreditation card every 45 minutes for some 2 000 delegates and 300 journalists. At one stage officials stood fanning the printer with a piece of card-board.

By this morning, delegates from Limpopo and the Eastern Cape had yet to receive their accreditation cards.
President Jacob Zuma was expected to open the long-awaited event at 9am.
