‘Long way to equal human rights’

2012-03-21 14:32

South Africa has a long way to go before it can truly enjoy equal human rights, the ANC Women’s League has said.

“While we are celebrating the leaps and bounds made in the progression of human rights in our country, we must not forget that as a nation we still have a long way to go before we truly all enjoy equal human rights,” it said in a statement.

The women’s league spoke of the importance of Human Rights Day, saying it was not an easy struggle to attain all the rights that South Africans enjoy today.

“It should never be forgotten what many went through as a nation to get to where we are today,” it said while commemorating the victims of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in which 69 people were shot dead by the security police in demonstrations opposing the pass laws.

The women’s league said it would not only celebrate the progressive laws enjoyed by South Africans but also the nation’s progressive Constitution.

However, it highlighted the discrimination and persecution that women still faced daily, despite these benefits.

It further acknowledged the accomplishments of women, which it said should be commended and celebrated. “We have come a long way in attaining equal rights to men.

“It should be remembered that the fight for true gender equality can only be realised when we have a society that does not carry around a patriarchal mindset.”

The league emphasised that it was not only striving for women’s rights but human rights. “We are of the view that women’s rights are human rights.”
