Lonmin commended for ‘safety achievements’

Mining company Lonmin has been commended by the Chamber of Mines for its safety achievements.

The chamber said in a statement the company had reached 17 million shifts without a fall of ground fatality at its Marikana operations in North West.

“This is even more notable given the considerable challenges that have beset these operations in recent months,” the chamber said.

“Also noteworthy is the performance of Lonmin’s Karee shaft where, in January, a milestone of six million fatality free shifts was reached.”

Lonmin made headlines when labour turbulence at its platinum mine in Marikana culminated in a violent clash between police and striking miners on August 16 last year.

A total of 34 mine workers were shot dead and 78 wounded. 10 people, including two police officers and two security guards, were killed near the mine in the preceding week.

Lonmin executive vice-president Mike Monroe said in the statement the safety achievement was a team effort.

“By focusing on leadership, simplifying systems, creating an enabling environment, and a safety conscious culture, we have ensured that we can all go home to our families safely without injury every day,” he said.
