Look to townships for future stars – Siphiwe Tshabalala

2014-07-08 15:52

Scouts should search for future Kaizer Chiefs and PSL stars in the townships, Siphiwe Tshabalala has said.

The 29-year-old Amakhosi attacking midfielder was recently present at an Under-13 tournament in Soweto, where he was able to witness the rich talent on display, Soccer-Laduma’s website reported.

The midfielder was raised on the same streets and fields in that area, and understands why the sprawling township is such a good breeding ground for future stars.

Tshabalala is a firm believer that sporting events combined with educational themes is a good way to combat social ills in more impoverished communities.

With Bafana Bafana struggling on the world stage, Tshabalala believes that the future of South African football undoubtedly lies within the talent found playing the game on the township streets.

“I think the initiative of hosting tournaments in the township is the way to go. We can discover a lot of talented players who can become the future of our football,” he said.

“I attended one in my hometown and I was surprised by the amount of talent I saw. These tournaments are educational and bring both worlds together – education plus sports. It also helps with taking the kids out of the negative situations that are affecting our youth today. So I promote such events.”
