Looting spreads in Soweto

2015-01-21 09:02

The looting of shops owned by foreign nationals spread to other areas in Soweto following a shooting incident in Snake Park, near Dobsonville.

“Reports this morning are that attacks on shops owned by foreign nationals spread overnight to areas such as Emdeni, Zola and Protea Glen,” police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said today.

Makhubela did not have more information on the overnight incidents.

Foreign nationals allegedly shot dead a teenager and injured another when a group of boys attempted to rob his shop on Monday.

The teenager died on the scene and the injured teen was taken to hospital.

The incident sparked violence in which shops owned by immigrants were looted and streets blockaded.

Twelve people were arrested in Snake Park.

“Five of them, who are foreign nationals, were charged with illegal possession of firearms, seven community members were charged with public violence,” Makhubela said.

The shop owners packed up and loaded their goods on vehicles. Police escorted them out of Snake Park.

Those arrested are expected to appear in the Protea Magistrates’ Court soon.
