Love in homophobic Malawi: Kim’s story

2010-12-19 12:20

An extract from one of the life stories featured in Queer Malawi:

My parents are not pressurising me to get married as I am still young and they are supporting me to complete my studies.

I’m waiting for my university entrance results.

I want to study nursing because there are only a few nurses in Malawi, but if I don’t get into nursing I would like to study journalism.

I have already told my mom that I will never marry.

Of course she asked me why, and I said for “personal reasons”.

Then she was quiet.

She didn’t ask me any more questions.

You see, I am a lesbian.

I think I was born like that, because I had my first kiss with a girl.

I feel happy with myself because God made me this way.

In Malawi they say being a lesbian is not normal.

They say you are following satanism because they don’t understand.

At times I wonder why I was born in Malawi because this country does not allow lesbian and gay people to express who they are.

If only the people of Malawi could just hear us out and allow us to share what we feel.

Then I think Malawi would be a better place.

I met my girlfriend at school in Malawi.

We are both into music and we met while practising for a music competition.

Then I don’t know what happened ... we just discovered we were in love.

Our love is unstoppable, even though we are separated for now because her parents work in another place.

We communicate daily.

We say: “Hi friend, let’s work hard, let’s be together, let’s be honest with each other, let’s try to avoid things that can disturb our relationship, like cheating and a lack of trust.”

We want to be together for a long time.

This is why we make sure we maintain our trust.
