Love is too big for institutions

2013-02-17 10:00

Tying the knot – I’ve tried it. Not because it was something I particularly wanted to do.

Being a romantic, I believe love shouldn’t be contained in an institution, or limited to one person.

Besides, if you really love and trust someone, that piece of paper is superfluous. It seems more like an insurance policy against the inevitable break-up.

But I thought he was the right one to get old with and he said if we wanted to live together, the proper thing would be to get married.

So, being indifferent to the institution, and being a brave 23, I agreed, figuring it would make no difference either way.

I was wrong.

That night, after a wonderful wedding, I kept on thinking: “Is this it?” An invisible tourniquet had bound itself around my neck.

Never mind how sweet and loving and beautiful and liberated my husband was, I couldn’t find a way to breathe.

And with it, all feeling died from the waist down.

Eventually, I cheated and we split up.

I agreed my cheating was unfair because it wasn’t part of the original agreement.

It made me happy hearing a few years later that he had found another wife.

As for me, it’s once bitten.
