MEC attends Ficksburg protester’s memorial service

2011-04-20 14:31

The memorial service of slain Ficksburg protester Andries Tatane started in the packed Maphenyadira community hall in Meqheleng this afternoon.

Free State MEC for Social Development Sisi Ntombela attended the service on behalf of the Free State government.

Ntombela is the latest politician who has visited Ficksburg the past week after Tatane was beaten and shot, allegedly by police, during a service delivery protest.

Ntombela said she was there to sympathise with the family. Speaking to journalists outside the community hall she said that the government would pay for Tatane’s funeral on Saturday.

One of his relatives, Sarah Bani, said the support the family had got from the community meant a lot.

“We thank them for that. We try our best to cope with the situation.”

She remembered Tatane for his friendliness and for always being prepared to help children with their work.

Tatane was an educator in the community and helped children with subjects such as maths at the local community library.
