MEC slams boy’s torching

2010-04-29 08:14

The setting alight of a 12-year-old boy during a bullying incident

has been condemned by Gauteng health and social development MEC Qedani

Mahlangu.

“Any form of bullying is not tolerable. Society and parents

especially have a responsibility of ensuring that we build our society on the

principle of tolerance”, she said.

According to the Sowetan newspaper the boy was doused with benzine and set alight by boys

who had been harassing him for money in Tembisa.

The harassment started on Sunday and his mother went to the boys to

demand the R11 back that they had taken from him.

They insulted her and said they had already bought bread with

it.

On Monday the boys confronted him again and his brother ran to his

mother to say that his sibling
was “on fire”.

He suffered serious burns and is recovering in hospital.

Two boys were reportedly taken into custody.
