MECs, mayors sign service delivery pacts

2010-09-30 11:56

A number of MECs and mayors from across the country had signed service delivery agreements with cooperative governance and traditional affairs minister Sicelo Shiceka.

The agreements were expected to ensure a responsive, accountable and efficient local government system.

The leaders met Shiceka and SA Local Government Association chairman Amos Masondo in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, for the “historic” ceremony today.

Shiceka said it was the first time the sector had signed an agreement of this nature.

Minister in the presidency Collins Chabane said the next phase was to focus on efficiency and capacity issues to support various government departments.

He said the next four to five years would see a new system of governance emerge.

Masondo said the agreements laid the basis for improving the quality of people’s lives.

They were intended to address job creation, service delivery and access to water and sanitation, and ensure better municipal financing, planning and support.
