MaSisulu funeral service gets underway

2011-06-11 08:37

The funeral service of the late ANC stalwart Albertina Sisulu got underway this morning at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium.

Mourners include President Jacob, Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputy Arthur Mutambara, and former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda.

Other mourners are former first ladies Zanele Mbeki and Graca Machel, former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and her husband Bulelani Ngcuka.

The government has given Sisulu an official funeral in recognition of her contribution to the liberation struggle.

Orlando was also the venue of the funeral of her late husband, Walter Sisulu.

The struggle veterans’ grandchildren took turns to read out a tribute to her, describing how Sisulu supported her late husband when he committed himself to the liberation struggle.

They also said she was the only woman who attended the inaugural meeting of the ANC Youth League, of which her husband was a member.

Anglican Cape Town Archbishop Thabo Makgoba opened the funeral in prayer as her coffin, which is draped in the national flag, lied in front of the main stage.

Both Justice Minister Jeff Radebe and ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete are officiating at the funeral.
