Mabandla replaces Mbete on African peer review body

2015-01-29 19:39

Former justice minister Brigitte Mabandla has been appointed to replace Speaker Baleka Mbete on the African Peer Review Mechanism’s Panel of Eminent Persons.

It is understood that Mbete, who was appointed in 2012 and congratulated by the ANC at the time, stepped down because of her obligations in Parliament and in the ANC. She was appointed Speaker after last year’s elections.

Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane at a press briefing on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa this evening confirmed Mabandla’s appointment.

The panel consists of five to seven people, but it is understood that it was enlarged to nine people.

Ivory Coast also signed up to the APRM this week, taking the amount of states taking part to 35.

The African Union currently has 54 member states.

The APRM was founded in 2003 as a way for member states of the AU to self-monitor, therefore reducing their reliance on countries outside the continent to monitor political, economic and corporate governance values, codes and standards.
