Mabuza rivals gear up for ANC conference vote

2012-04-05 12:10

Rivals of Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza will meet tonight to decide on their candidate to stand against him for the job of provincial ANC chairperson during a conference starting tomorrow.

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has proposed current party treasurer and health MEC, Clifford Mkasi, as their preferred successor to Mabuza, but the SACP and Cosatu favour ANC deputy chairperson and Nkangala district municipal manager Charles Makola.

The three organisations, however, agree on one thing – that Mabuza must not serve a second term as both party chairperson and premier.

Should the anti-Mabuza camp win, Makola and Mkasi are destined to serve as chairperson and deputy chairperson of the ANC as the ANCYL wanted Makola to be deputy chairperson while the SACP and Cosatu eyed Mkasi as Makola’s deputy.

Mabuza has been accused of sowing division within the ANC, alienating comrades who dare question his leadership style and failing to curb corruption.

ANCYL provincial secretary Clarence Maseko said the league was prepared to compromise for the sake of removing Mabuza.

“We’re not obsessed with personalities. All we need is a shake-up in the provincial leadership. Either of the two will be fine and we hope to reach a consensus with the SACP and Cosatu,” Maseko said.

Mkasi is, according to a source lobbying for him, prepared to stand as Makola’s deputy.

“Mkasi will accept another position because he feels that there shouldn’t be three candidates for one position,” the source said.

Provincial Cosatu chairperson Fidel Mlombo said the union would not make public their preferred candidate other than to say that they wanted a new character of ANC leadership.

“We don’t want to be seen as part of factions within the ANC as that divides Cosatu,” Mlombo said.

Mabuza’s success in this conference will boost President Jacob Zuma’s chances of a second term in Mangaung as he is the president’s ally.

The Mabuza and Makola teams according to circulating lists:

Chairperson: David Mabuza

Deputy chairperson: David Dube (Human settlements HOD)

Secretary: Lucky Ndinisa (current secretary)

Deputy secretary: Violet Siwela (legislature member)

Treasurer: Andries Gamede (former Gert Sibande district mayor)

Chairperson: Charles Makola

Deputy chairperson: Clifford Mkasi

Secretary: Lucky Ndinisa

Deputy secretary: Boy Nobunga (legislature member)

Treasurer: Candith Mashego-Dlamini (agriculture MEC)
