Mabuza ‘spin-doctor reward’ irks DA

2011-02-01 14:22

The Mpumalanga DA has threatened to complain to the Public Protector and the Public Service Commission (PSC) about what is seen as a reward to Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza’s spokesperson, Mabutho Sithole, who is facing a corruption charge.

Sithole allegedly bribed City Press Mpumalanga reporter Sizwe sama Yende with R5 000 in December to drop a story, which implicated his boss in a R230-million tender that was awarded to Mabuza’s friend, Patrick Chirwa, under questionable circumstances while the premier was MEC in the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Land Administration in 2008.

Mabuza announced that Sithole had been removed from the position but was not charged.

Last week, Sithole was appointed as director for community outreach services.“

The DA is outraged at Premier David Mabuza’s blatant disregard for the people of Mpumalanga by appointing his ex-’spin doctor’ as the Premier Office’s new Director of Community Outreach Services,” DA leader Anthony Benadie said today.

“It goes beyond comprehension that Sithole’s employment conditions have furthermore been changed from a temporary employee to permanent employee,” said Benadie.

Benadie added that Sithole’s appointment was a “smack in the face of Mpumalanga’s people,” and showed Mabuza’s lack of commitment in fighting corruption.

Benadie said he would submit questions to Mabuza about Sithole’s appointment and the appointment process followed.

Furthermore, the DA would write to the Public Protector and the Public Service Commission, requesting an investigation into Sithole’s appointment.
