Macia: Cops to remain behind bars

2013-03-04 11:05

Eight police officers accused of killing taxi driver Mido Macia by assaulting and dragging him behind a police van will remain behind bars until Friday for the bail application.

The accused did not appear in the Benoni Magistrates’ Court this morning as expected because police are yet to conduct an identity parade on Thursday.

As a result, senior prosecutor December Mthimunye requested that the names and the pictures of the accused not be published.

He said: “That will not be in the interest of justice if their (pictures) are taken and it might jeopardise the state’s case.”

Defence lawyer Pat Sithole also requested that the eight police officers be kept at police holding cells either in Benoni or Boksburg until their bail application has been finalised.

He said: “The accused have made numerous arrests in their careers and it will not be right for them to be taken to a correctional facility at this stage.

“We request they be kept at police holding cells either in Benoni or Boksburg because of this.”

Magistrate Samuel Makamu granted the request.

Macia (27), a Mozambican national, died of internal bleeding as a result of head injuries he sustained, allegedly when assaulted by the police officers.
