Madonsela to investigate team appointed to probe Guptagate

2013-08-28 17:24

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will investigate a complaint against the task team appointed to probe the Gupta plane landing scandal.

“Yes, she will be investigating that complaint,” her spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said today.

The complaint was lodged by Waterkloof Air Force Base official Lt-Col Christine Anderson, who was implicated by the team in its report.

SA National Defence Union secretary Pikkie Greeff said in May the findings against Anderson, who was the base’s officer commanding movement control, were not objectively reached.

He said the report’s findings had been made even though Anderson was not formally involved in the investigation.

The full report on the landing of the plane at the Waterkloof Air Force Base was released in May by the justice, crime prevention, and security (JCPS) cluster of ministries.

It stated that collusion by officials resulted in the irregular clearance for the plane to land at the base.

It found that the correct clearance procedures for landing were followed, but were based on “false pretences, as a result of the manipulation of the process” by the Gupta family, individuals in the Indian High Commission, chief of state protocol Ambassador Bruce Koloane, and Anderson.

It found that the actions taken by Koloane and Anderson were a serious dereliction of duty.

Anderson was found to have inverted command and control and unduly influenced the processing of the clearance.

On April 29, a plane chartered by the Gupta family, carrying 270 guests, landed at Waterkloof.

The guests were attending the wedding of Vega Gupta (23) and Indian-born Aakash Jahajgarhia at Sun City. The landing sparked widespread criticism.

The government then initiated a probe into the matter, including whether or not it was a possible breach of diplomatic protocol.
