Madonsela wants answers from premier

2012-04-19 14:41

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has requested an urgent meeting with Free State Premier Ace Magashule and his Human Settlements MEC Olly Mlamleli after her visit to the province’s Nala municipality.

This follows a trip to Wesselsbron and Bothaville where residents complained about a dysfunctional sewerage system and problems with their RDP houses.

The residents told Madonsela that nothing had been done about their plight despite numerous complaints to the municipality and the provincial government.

Residents were also unhappy about the municipality’s alleged failure to act on a forensic report which found widespread maladministration and corruption. The forensic report has been gathering dust for months and had not been made public.

Madonsela promised to work with the different tiers of government to have the services to residents in these towns restored urgently.

Meanwhile, she said, her investigation into Operation Hlasela – a multimillion-rand service delivery advocacy vehicle which is being run from Magashule’s office – is still underway.

Madonsela announced the investigation in November and her office said they were looking into the nature of Operation Hlasela, whether it was using public funds and who was accounting for the money.
