Magistrate accused of rape

2013-10-31 08:33

An East London magistrate has appeared before one of his colleagues on a rape charge.

He was temporarily removed from the bench after the charges emerged, the DispatchOnline reported today.

The magistrate, who cannot be named until he has formally pleaded, was released on R1000 bail.

Chief Magistrate Valerie Gqiba said the magistrate had not been suspended, but a report would be submitted to the Magistrates Commission on charges against him.

Gciba said the public did not expect a presiding officer to be on the bench one day and in the dock the next day.

The matter was postponed to January 17 next year.
