Mahindra launches new Thar

2010-03-31 14:57

Mahindra South Africa recently launched the retro-styled Mahindra

Thar 4x4 at a competitive price.

The Thar has a heritage which can be traced back to the origins of

Mahindra which began its operations by assembling the Willys Jeep in India in

1945.

The Thar was first put on display to the public as a concept

vehicle at the 2008 Bologna Motor Show in Italy. It received rave reviews and

generated so much excitement that it prompted Mahindra to launch the model in

global markets.

Power for this two-seater vehicle comes from a 2.5-litre, direct

injection turbo-diesel CRDe engine which is the result of a joint venture

between AVL, of Austria, and Bosch, of Germany.

It is manufactured in India by Mahindra and meets Euro IV

regulations.

The engine develops 78 kW of power and 247Nm of torque. It drives

the rear wheels – or all four wheels when required – through a five-speed Borg

Warner gearbox, with a two-speed transfer box with low speed selection.

The Thar is capable of facing up to the most gruelling terrain with

ease.

Suspension is independent by means of torsion bars in front and the

live rear axle is suspended on two leaf springs.

Braking is by discs up front and drums at the rear. Off-road

capability is aided by a 200 mm ground clearance, an approach angle of 46

degrees, departure angle of 30 degrees and ramp over angle of 15 degrees. Kerb

weight is 1 750 kg.

The Mahindra Thar is available at a very competitive price of R169

900 with a 50 000km or 24 month warranty.

Customers can purchase the Thar in a choice of colours, including

Arctic White, Fiery Black, Toreador Red and Mist Silver. It can also be

customised to suit the requirements of individuals’.

The new 4x4 Thar is available at more than 30 national

dealerships.

With the introduction of the Thar, Mahindra South Africa’s product

line-up now features four model ranges, including the Bolero, Scorpio and XYLO.
