Mmusi Maimane, the DA’s candidate for Gauteng premier, has promised to create jobs for the province’s unemployed if his party wins Gauteng next year.

Addressing what was described as the party’s biggest Soweto rally yesterday, Maimane said President Jacob Zuma’s government had let down the jobless.

He said Gauteng, Africa’s richest province, could create jobs.

“We have to get our youth off nyaope. And the best way is to create the jobs. We need to give people the dignity they deserve,” he said.

“My number one priority is to get the economy of Gauteng working so that we can create jobs.”

He promised to do this by ridding government of corruption, which he said was benefiting the ANC and its cronies.

He also pledged to make Gauteng more business-friendly and facilitate the growth of businesses to create employment.

He promised to halt e-tolls, which he said would kill initiative and impoverish the province’s residents.

Maimane took a swipe at Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, who told service-delivery protesters in Bekkersdal that the ANC did not want their “dirty votes”.

“To her we say: there is no such thing as a dirty vote. There is only dirty government. And we are coming to clean the dirt away,” he said.
