Makaziwe visits Mandela

2013-09-03 16:25

The eldest daughter of ailing former president Nelson Mandela arrived at his Johannesburg home on Tuesday.

Makaziwe Mandela drove into the main gate of the Houghton home at 3.15pm in a silver Jeep.

Earlier in the day, former SA National Defence Force surgeon general Vejay Ramlakan arrived at Mandela’s home.

Ramlakan also drove in through the main gate and the gates quickly closed behind him.

Ramlakan was regularly seen arriving at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria during Mandela’s stay there.

President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday morning that Mandela was responding to treatment at home after being discharged from hospital at the weekend.

“You have heard that Tata Madiba left hospital for his home ... He remains critical but stable, responding to treatment,” Zuma told editors at a breakfast briefing in Pretoria.

“I think we feel very good ... that he could leave hospital, which indicates the progress he has made.

“We acknowledge that he is old and that he is not well, but we are very happy that he has gone home.”

On Sunday the presidency said Mandela had been discharged from the hospital where he had been treated since his June 8 admission with a lung infection.
