The funeral of former president Nelson Mandela has had its light moments, despite the sombre mood that characterised the funeral service in Qunu.

Co-programme director Cyril Ramaphosa joked that President Jacob Zuma should feel free to mention Malawi as there was nothing to worry about.

This was a reference to Zuma’s comments that nearly sparked a diplomatic crisis when he defended e-tolling by arguing that Gauteng’s freeways were not like “some national road in Malawi”.

The SA ambassador to that country was called by the Malawian authorities to account for Zuma’s gaffe made at Wits University during the launch of the ANC manifesto.

Malawian President Joyce Banda paid a moving tribute to Madiba, saying he had inspired her to forgive the people who tried to assassinate her when she became president.

Zuma couldn’t suppress a giggle when he mentioned Malawi during his speech at the funeral.

Zuma and Banda have since met, and smoked the peace pipe.
