Advocate Dali Mpofu couldn’t sleep with his “mother”, Winnie Mandela, Julius Malema told his supporters outside the Polokwane High Court today.

Malema was busy attacking the ANC and its leaders, saying they had “sold out” South Africans, when he turned to Winnie Mandela who, he said, “remains the only loyal cadre to the revolution”.

The alleged affair of Winnie Mandela and Mpofu in the early 1990s – which also reportedly contributed to her divorce from former president Nelson Mandela – has not been top of mind for some time, but Malema seemingly felt he had to set the record straight.

“This man has got no potential to sleep with his mother. Winnie Mandela is Dali Mpofu’s mother,” Malema said.

Earlier, Malema’s fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering case was postponed as the national director of public prosecutions had not yet made a decision on the dropping of the charges against him.

Winnie Mandela is known to have a soft spot for Malema and supported him during the disciplinary process before he was expelled from the ANC.

Malema said reports that Mpofu and Winnie Mandela were having an affair emanated from propaganda by “the boers” in a bid to destroy Nelson Mandela’s now former wife.

“They were destroying Winnie, saying she had an affair with Dali Mpofu because they wanted to discredit her. The ANC people believe that propaganda of the boers, and they’re still using it against Winnie and Dali,” he said.

“Why did the boers accuse Winnie of sleeping with Dali? It’s because they could not afford to have a revolutionary sleeping next to Mandela every day and Winnie was a threat to them. They wanted to co-opt [Nelson] Mandela into their project and they had to take Winnie out of the bedroom so that they can have access to Nelson Mandela and they destroyed her,” Malema said.

“They destroyed Winnie because they knew that of all those who led us before freedom before the release of Nelson Mandela, it was Winnie they couldn’t buy,” Malema said.

In what would perhaps dismiss rumours that Winnie Mandela might join the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Malema said she “remained the leader of ANC because she is ANC”.

“To ask [Winnie Mandela] to come to EFF, you’re asking her to leave herself, but remember she is an economic freedom fighter. She is fearless,” he said.

“If we had all the power, we should make her president before she dies. If we don’t honour Winnie, it means the propaganda of apartheid has succeeded. People are being honoured all round, including musicians. I am sure [kwaito artist] Chomee will get an award before Winnie gets one.”

Malema urged his supporters to draw inspiration from Winnie Mandela. “We must be inspired by her fearless character. She remains the mother of the nation. She’s a revolutionary to the end and all of us must seek to be like her.”

Malema had earlier in his address welcomed Mpofu to the EFF, and told supporters that the celebrity advocate would lead the party’s special projects and “underground work”.
