Malema’s die-hard friends

2011-04-23 19:32

When days are dark, friends are plenty.

Julius Malema had the constant support of an ANC veteran and a young lion during his hate-speech trial.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (MP) and head of Limpopo’s local government and housing department, Clifford Motsepe, took leave to attend Malema’s case and they have been there from day one.

Moloto Mothapo, spokesperson for ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga, said Madikizela-Mandela’s written request to be absent from Parliament had been accepted by the ANC chief whip.

“The authority lies with the office of the chief whip to accept. He can decide to accept or refuse leave. Madikizela-Mandela’s request was allowed because it’s a party matter,” Mothapo said.

Motsepe took nine days of his yearly leave to attend the proceedings. He told City Press that he would have taken unpaid leave if he had no other choice.

“Our struggle songs are our history and heritage. They define who we are as South Africans. They remind us about the brutal and nonsensical apartheid regime.

“We must preserve them for future generations,” said Motsepe, who is also an ANC Youth League national executive committee member.
