Mamelodi tense over service delivery

2010-03-23 13:15

THE situation in Mamelodi East was “very tense” this morning as

police fired rubber bullets at protesting residents, Pretoria police said.

Residents, demanding that government deliver on its promises for

better service delivery, blockaded roads leading in and out of the township with

stones from since last night, said Captain Johannes Maheso.

“It’s very tense ... People are just lining the streets, others in

groups. They started by burning tyres and throwing stones at passing cars,” said

Maheso.

Roads affected were Hans Strijdom and Hector Peterson.

Maheso said a few houses were also damaged by thrown stones.

“Police had to fire rubber bullets at the violent crowd to calm the

situation.”

A lot of people had to walk long distances to get taxis to work.

Maheso said a large number of police was deployed to the scene to calm the

protesters.
