Man arrested for attack on sisters

2011-09-17 14:17

A man was arrested following the murder of an eight-year-old girl, and the stabbing and wounding of her sister in Grabouw this morning, Western Cape police said.

The sisters were sleeping in their aunt’s home in the Makhaza settlement when a neighbour entered through a window shortly after 3am, said Warrant Officer November Filander.

The younger sibling was stabbed to death. Her 12-year-old sister escaped with multiple wounds.

“It is believed the children were placed in the care of their 28-year-old aunt, who was drinking at a neighbour’s (house) across the road at the time of the incident,” said Filander. Their mother, a seasonal worker in Citrusdal, was also not there.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime on a gravel road outside Grabouw around 9am.

“We believe he was on his way to a neighbouring farm. We also retrieved the murder weapon. The possibility that both victims were raped will form part of the investigation,” said Filander.

The man is expected to appear in the Grabouw Magistrates’ Court.
